2018 sees the introduction of the Women’s Herald Sun Tour presented by Let’s Go Motorhomes as part of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. After a rich 65-year history with the men’s tour first being held in October 1952, 2018 sees an exciting move with the first women’s race incorporated into the event. With the backing of Jayco and Herald Sun, along with the Victorian Stage Government, plus the strong support of Let’s Go Motorhomes, the women will race a two-day, two-stage tour prior to the men’s event kicking off. Stage 1 will see the women tackle the stunning but tough terrain of the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, a popular training ground for many Melbourne cyclists. Starting and finishing in Healesville, the riders will travel through Woori Yallock, Yarra Junction, Warburton and Chum Creek, with two tough climbs in Old Warburton Rd and Myers Creek Rd, before a fast run into the finish.
The women will then head into the City of Melbourne for the Melbourne ITT, a fast and technical Individual Time Trial prior to the men kicking off with their Prologue on the same course. Starting in Alexandra Gardens, the riders will race along the banks of the Yarra River, before finishing in Queensbridge Square, Southbank.
With some of the world’s best women’s teams and riders participating, it is sure to be two exciting days of fast, close racing, which will also generate significant economic impacts and media exposure for the area involved.
